Young people across a diverse and rapidly changing country

Indonesia’s cities are being transformed by urban growth, digitalisation, and a changing climate. For the country’s 64 million young people, these shifts are changing how they live, connect and participate in their communities. With a majority of young people already living in urban areas, cities are increasingly important spaces for their opportunities, health and participation.

Challenges

Creating opportunities to participate

Indonesia’s diversity means that young people’s opportunities and experiences vary considerably across places and communities. Rapid urban growth and climate change are placing new demands on cities, while digital technologies are changing how young people connect and participate. Creating meaningful ways for young people to contribute to public decisions and the development of their communities is an important part of navigating these changes.

Our work

Youth participation across cities and systems

Fondation Botnar’s work in Indonesia has connected youth participation with urban development, sustainable food systems, mental health and inclusive public decision-making. Across these areas, our partners are creating opportunities for young people to contribute their perspectives and ideas, while working with institutions and other local actors to translate them into practice.

Looking ahead

Consolidating existing work

As Fondation Botnar concentrates its future work in fewer countries, we will conclude our engagement in Indonesia by the end of 2029. During this period of transition our focus is on completing existing commitments responsibly, strengthening what partners have built and supporting learning and approaches that can continue beyond our funding.
